{"id":5527,"date":"2023-05-17T00:34:23","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T05:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/?post_type=product&#038;p=5527"},"modified":"2023-05-21T13:07:51","modified_gmt":"2023-05-21T18:07:51","slug":"douglas-dc-3-dakota-short-kit","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/?product=douglas-dc-3-dakota-short-kit","title":{"rendered":"Douglas DC-3 Dakota Short Kit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although the photo from Model Airplane News looks good, the plan is a bit of a mess.\u00a0 Nonetheless, this is a worthy scale project for a confident builder.<\/p>\n<p>When the plan is viewed with the drafting software a lot of inconsistencies become evident. \u00a0The bulkheads as pictured on the plan do not generally match the height and width as shown in the top and side views of the fuselage. \u00a0The nacelle bulkheads are way off. \u00a0Another egregious error is the engine mount plate, which would protrude from the sides of the nacelle if cut as shown on the plan, so I\u2019ve altered the shape to make it fit inside the nacelle.<\/p>\n<p>Another major problem is F1 (or the nose cone). \u00a0I don\u2019t get it. \u00a0My kit contains F1, which I don\u2019t think was intended on the plan. \u00a0I sized it to yield the correct outline as shown in the top and side fuselage views when planked with 3\/16 balsa. \u00a0Oddly, the fuselage sides protrude ahead of the F1 line.\u00a0 Maybe just sand the front off the fuselage sides, then add a block for the nose cone. \u00a0I figure if you are building one, you should know how to handle these issues.<\/p>\n<p>Probably the most important thing you\u2019ll need to think about is the fact that there is a 3.65\u2033 clearance between the nacelle centerline and the fuselage side. \u00a0As drawn, the maximum propeller size is 7 inches. \u00a0The wing center section can be stretched an inch on each side to allow 9\u2033 propellers, which is good for electric or up to 20 size glow power. \u00a0I\u2019m including an extra center section rib to help with stretching the center section. \u00a0You\u2019ll probably also want to explore 3 bladed propeller options.<\/p>\n<p>The fuselage formers are cut from lite ply. \u00a0When you order, please specify if you want the 1\/4\u2033 ply engine mounting plate, or\u00a0if you want to leave out the plate and mount your electric motor or small glow engine to a flat firewall. \u00a0For the flat firewall option the firewall and second bulkhead have notches for 1\/4 x 1\/4 stringers to form the nacelle outline, which is then planked with 3\/16 balsa per the plan. \u00a0If this explanation is confusing, just send me an email.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although the photo from Model Airplane News looks good, the plan is a bit of a mess.\u00a0 Nonetheless, this is a worthy scale project for a confident builder.
