{"id":5611,"date":"2023-05-18T00:08:02","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T05:08:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/?post_type=product&#038;p=5611"},"modified":"2025-09-24T12:25:56","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T17:25:56","slug":"lazy-ace-short-kit","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/?product=lazy-ace-short-kit","title":{"rendered":"Lazy Ace Short Kit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chuck Cunningham designed this plane with the firewall stuck to the front of the fuselage sides, but my kit has the firewall between the fuselage sides, which I think is a slightly better way to do it. \u00a0Start your 1\/8\u2033 doublers 1\/4\u2033 behind the front of the fuselage sides to make room for the firewall.<\/p>\n<p>Lite ply fuselage side doublers are provided for your convenience, to replace the 1\/8\u2033 balsa vertical grain doublers. \u00a0Use these if you want to, or don\u2019t if you don\u2019t want to. \u00a0The holes for the strut mount blocks are not included because I don\u2019t know what size mount blocks you will be using.<\/p>\n<p>Another deviation from the plan is the horizontal stabilizer. \u00a0I don\u2019t like the little point on the front of the ribs, so I\u2019m cutting them for a 3\/8 x 1\/2 leading edge stick. \u00a0(If you have only 3\/8 x 3\/8, just glue a 1\/8 strip on\u00a0one side.) \u00a0Also, the four stabilizer center section ribs are cut\u00a0smaller to accommodate the sheeting. \u00a0Instead of putting the center sheeting between the center section ribs, just stick one sheet across the bottom, and put two smaller sheets on the top with a gap in the middle for the vertical stabilizer. \u00a0Now your vertical stabilizer ribs get\u00a0to sit on top of the bottom sheeting, which I think is nice.<\/p>\n<p>One other deviation involves the front top deck. \u00a0I\u2019ve studied the plan, I\u2019ve read the original construction article, and I\u2019ve tried to figure it out. \u00a0But I can\u2019t figure it out. \u00a0So I\u2019m just designing the top deck my way. \u00a0Build the fuselage, put the top bulkheads on, and install\u00a0the 1\/32\u2033 ply skin so\u00a0the aft edge covers Bulkhead C. \u00a0I\u2019ll cut this bulkhead\u00a0with a relief on each side to accommodate the skin. \u00a0I don\u2019t know what Chuck was doing when he built the\u00a0original. \u00a0The skin sort of floats in front of C with nothing solid to attach to. \u00a0My way doesn\u2019t exactly match the plan, but I think you\u2019ll like it. \u00a0If you have any questions, just ask.<\/p>\n<p>There are two options for the ribs. \u00a0You can have them cut\u00a0as shown on the plan, or modified to build the wing with cap strips. \u00a0You tell me which way you want it. \u00a0Sharp eyed observers will notice in the diagrams below that the rear spar size depends on which ribs you order, so pay attention.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ribs.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1927\" src=\"http:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ribs.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 841px) 100vw, 841px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ribs.jpg 841w, https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ribs-600x161.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ribs-300x81.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ribs-768x206.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ribs-500x134.jpg 500w\" alt=\"ribs\" width=\"841\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also, you may notice in the photos below that I built my Lazy Ace without the plywood rails on top of the cabane struts. \u00a0I used soldered wire terminals on the tops of the struts for attaching the wing with four 1\/4\u2033 nylon bolts. \u00a0You can order your kit with or without the plywood cabane rails. \u00a0It just saves me a little bit of cutting time if I don\u2019t have to include them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chuck Cunningham designed this plane with the firewall stuck to the front of the fuselage sides, but my kit has the firewall between the fuselage sides, which I think is a slightly better way to do it. \u00a0Start your 1\/8\u2033 &hellip;
