{"id":5688,"date":"2023-05-18T15:33:34","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T20:33:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/?post_type=product&#038;p=5688"},"modified":"2025-09-24T11:44:26","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T16:44:26","slug":"wayfarer-short-kit","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/?product=wayfarer-short-kit","title":{"rendered":"Wayfarer Short Kit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Wayfarer short kit comes with two options. \u00a0You can have ribs as shown on the plan, or you can have ribs with notches for 3\/16 x 3\/16 hard wood spars as is more common in modern airplanes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerribchoice.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3005\" src=\"http:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerribchoice.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerribchoice.jpg 518w, https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerribchoice-300x107.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerribchoice-500x179.jpg 500w\" alt=\"wayfarerribchoice\" width=\"518\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The other option is the cabane struts. \u00a0You can have them\u00a0as shown on the plan for use with rubber bands, or you can have them without the rubber band rails. \u00a0The alternate struts come with a floor made of two layers of 1\/8 plywood. \u00a0Because the wing is semi symmetrical, the floor will need to be filled at the front in back with balsa sheet to match the contour of the bottom of the airfoil.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerstrutchoice.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3006\" src=\"http:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerstrutchoice.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerstrutchoice.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerstrutchoice-600x661.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerstrutchoice-272x300.jpg 272w, https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerstrutchoice-768x846.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/wayfarerstrutchoice-930x1024.jpg 930w\" alt=\"wayfarerstrutchoice\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1322\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you want to attach your wings with rubber bands, choose the standard struts, and drill holes in the fuselage for dowels. \u00a0If you want bolts, choose the alternate struts. \u00a0In either case, the kit comes with bolt plates to be installed in the fuselage for bolting the trailing edge of the bottom wing. \u00a0Also, don\u2019t forget that all 1\/4 plywood parts will be laminated from two layers of 1\/8. \u00a0For best results, consider laminating a piece of fine fiberglass cloth or carbon fiber in the middle of your cabane strut sandwiches to increase strength.<\/p>\n<p>When you build the Wayfarer, you need to know that some of the bulkheads as drawn on the plan are inaccurate. \u00a0F2 is a bit off, and\u00a0F3 is a mess. \u00a0I have redrawn the bulkheads to fit correctly in the fuselage. \u00a0I have also added a bulkhead that I\u2019m calling F3A, to provide support for the top sheeting next to the strut.<\/p>\n<p>Also, I noticed that the scan from Outerzone shows the fuselage 36.37\u2033 long, which is something a smart designer such as Don Dewey normally would not do. \u00a0Somehow the image got stretched a bit when it was scanned, so I scaled my plan to 98.75% when I drew the kit parts. \u00a0If you want your plan to match the parts, print it at this scale. \u00a0If you print it at 100% you can still build a nice plane, but the parts will be a tiny bit smaller than the drawings.<\/p>\n<p>Another note to keep in mind is that I cut the rib notches in the root ribs so the dihedral braces will be attached to the rear of the front spars and the front of the rear spars. \u00a0The plan shows the braces on the opposite side of the spars. \u00a0My way allows you to build the wing with leading and trailing edge sheeting before installing the main braces at the spars.<\/p>\n<p>It sounds like a lot to keep track of, but it\u2019s nothing too outrageously difficult. \u00a0This is a nice plane that everybody should build sooner or later.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Wayfarer short kit comes with two options. \u00a0You can have ribs as shown on the plan, or you can have ribs with notches for 3\/16 x 3\/16 hard wood spars as is more common in modern airplanes.
