{"id":5803,"date":"2023-05-20T01:18:42","date_gmt":"2023-05-20T06:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/?post_type=product&#038;p=5803"},"modified":"2025-09-24T11:28:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T16:28:09","slug":"drake-ii-short-kit","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/www.balsaworkbench.com\/?product=drake-ii-short-kit","title":{"rendered":"Drake II Short Kit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You can have 1\/4 x 3\/8 spar notches as shown on the plan for balsa spars, or 3\/16 x 1\/4 for optional hardwood spars.<\/p>\n<p>I built one of these a few years ago, powered by an OS 15 FP. \u00a0It flew even better than I expected. \u00a0It\u2019s tempting to think that there will be extra trouble when you try to fly a seaplane, but this one flies like any well designed RC plane. \u00a0It\u2019s smooth and predictable, it lands well, and it even does aerobatic stunts. \u00a0The Drake II is a very simple build, so if you have ever considered building a seaplane there\u2019s no reason not to jump in and do it.<\/p>\n<p>The engine pylon is the hardest part, but it\u2019s already cut out for you. \u00a0The pylon is designed for a .15 glow engine, but it\u2019s easy enough to saw off the engine bearers and add\u00a0a flat plate for mounting an electric motor if you\u2019re one of those people.<\/p>\n<p>The plan shows a nacelle built from small bits of balsa and a tail cone made from a little balsa block. \u00a0The kit does not include any of these parts\u00a0because various builders will build the nacelle to match their own battery or fuel tank size, so there\u2019s not much point in me cutting little rectangles that you\u2019re just going to replace anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The parts are cut pretty much according to the plan. \u00a0If you want to build it with ailerons, just trim 1\/4\u2033 off the tail of each rib and put a stick on the trailing edge, and use a piece of tapered stock as an aileron.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re having a hard time finding the Drake II plan send me an email.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You can have 1\/4 x 3\/8 spar notches as shown on the plan for balsa spars, or 3\/16 x 1\/4 for optional hardwood spars.
