I’ve always been a big fan of the OS 10 engine. I’m always looking for a good plane to put one on. What if there was a Q-Tee just the right size for a .10 glow engine? Now there is. It’s a +1/6 version of the RCM Q-Tee.
I’ve changed a few details to get everything to work out properly.
- Top fuselage stringer is 1/8 x 1/4, and the bulkheads are notched for easy placement.
- Kit includes fuselage side doublers fore and aft of F2. Doublers are notched for 1/16″ ply landing gear plates. See photos below. After these plates are in place, attach the outer 1/16″ ply floor. This will create a solid foundation for your landing gear of choice.
- Leading edge is 3/8″ thick. Wing spars are 3/16″ square bass wood, plus shear webs. Build the wing on the plan, but there’s no tapered trailing edge stock. Use trailing edge sheeting about an inch to an inch and a half wide. Leading edge sheeting extends from the spar to the leading edge. Add cap strips in the middle. Alternatively you can sheet the entire wing. In any case, sheeting is 1/16″ balsa. Here’s an illustration of the wing construction details.
- Fill the space between the top and bottom trailing edge sheeting in the center section with scrap balsa before you make the trailing edge cutout above the cockpit.
- There’s an alternate wing available with open structure as shown on the plan, but instead of trailing edge stock the trailing edge is made from 1/16 x 1 – 1/4 sheeting on top and bottom. Please specify if you want this option. If you want to build a standard Q-Tee style wing with tapered trailing edge stock, just cut the tail off of the rib.
- Dihedral is 2 – 3/32″ each tip (2.09″) or 4 – 3/16″ at one tip with the other panel flat on the table.
- Another alternate wing is available with ailerons. Dihedral is 1/2 of the figures quoted for the regular wing. Trailing edge stick is 1/4″ balsa.
- Cabane struts and rails are 1/8″ plywood to be laminated to make 1/4″ plywood. Rails are lengthened for more rubber band space. Find where your wing goes in relation to the fuselage, and attach the rails so you get an equal length extending fore and aft beyond the wing.
- Use 3/16 square for the turtle deck stringers. I used leftover basswood spar stock on mine.
- Print the standard RCM Q-Tee plan at 117% to get the correct size.
The dandy looking yellow plane in the gallery photos was built by Kenneth Strom.
